Title: Heroes Season 3 - Villains (spoilers!)*
Description: *up to the last ep shown in the US
Dajhail - September 23, 2008 08:27 PM (GMT)
Just seen the first two episodes. I think it's safe to say it's back on form.
I was a little surprised to see everyone back from the dead, but they leave it vague enough for me to give them the benefit of the doubt. Right now it seems like they've gone right back to the formula of the first two series, with the mysterious world ending series of events that need to be stopped... again. But at this point complaining about that would be like complaining that every season of 24 is about stopping terrorists.
The thing they've done differently this time, is go into the story full speed. No slow build up, and no '3 months later' to set up their surprises. The two episodes pick right up where the last season left off (or just before) and throw out a new revelation and 'what the fuck?' moment every five minutes or so. Also (spoiler) no black tears! No West! No one is stuck in ancient Japan! Sylar has powers again!
My rating: Assuming all this shit actually makes sense in the end... 4/5.

I love this show, and after watching the first two episodes of the season, I couldn't be happier. I mean, the show's not only back on track after a sub-par rushed second season, but it seems like it's going to be raising alot of questions and giving out some answers we've all been waiting for, which to be honest, is what seems to get me hooked on TV shows.
Can't wait for next week!

Dajhail - September 30, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
Episode 3 was good too, though I'm sure Hiro's getting stupider. I miss the days when he was enthusiastic about things and driven to be heroic, instead of putting everyone else at risk just so he can satisfy his arrogance and chase his destiny. Maybe spending some time in a Company jail will teach him some sense. Then again it only seemed to make Peter more naive and stupid.
It only just occurs to me that Maya and Brundlefly took the week off. I definitely didn't miss them.
Edit: Sylar is back to being awesome.
Edit 2: It just occurs to me that if Peter can take powers from future Peter then the list of shit he should be able to do has gone WAY up. Including powers such as 'pretending to be his younger self' and 'hiding people inside other people's bodies.' Plus now he's got 'flamethrowing', 'feeding off fear' and 'sonic scream' in his repertoire. Shame he was probably too late to get 'magnetism'. If he'd stuck around a little longer he could have had that 'read an object's past' skill from Sylar too.
spik - October 1, 2008 07:07 AM (GMT)
Yeah. Episode 3 as defintely a winner. Good to see Sylar back on track, but at the same time, with a bit more character diversity.

Episode 4: I Am Become Death...
They're still continuing to blend stupid with awesome. Well, stupid with watchable. But then Heroes has been stupid from episode 1, at least it's moving fast enough again now that I don't have time to care much about the little things.
A few spoiler filled thoughts;
*Uh, you can't kill Peter like that. His healing power would eventually push the bullets out and bring him back to life. Like it's done before. Glad they remembered he can survive a nuke though.
*Peter's got a new power, the ability to be evil and want to slice open people's heads. Though I guess if it comes with the power to be smart enough to use his powers properly occasionally like Sylar then it's a fair trade off.
*Peter also goes for a walk through the future, where everyone has powers... he must have picked up a couple of other good new ones that day. Super speed and whatever Noah probably had at the least. Hope he didn't catch Mohinderfly's new power though, that would kinda suck.
*Current number of US Presidents Peter Petrelli has assaulted: 2.
*Yeah, giving everyone powers is a great idea. It doesn't matter if humanity can be trusted with the powers or not when the available gifts include 'unknowingly emitting lethal radiation', 'unconsciously absorbing enough powers to explode with the force of an atomic bomb' and 'becoming a head slicing, power obsessed, serial killer'. These powers have like a 1/20 chance of turning people evil or into living nuclear bombs.
*As far as I can tell, every single major disaster and bad future so far has been triggered or engineered by part of the Petrelli family. Though to be fair, half the characters in the series are a Petrelli.
Also, is 'Dr. Zimmerman' TV's newest injoke or something? I keep seeing the name appear in new series, always as a doctor.
spik - October 8, 2008 09:10 AM (GMT)
Definately not digging Peter's storyline, but future Sylar was full of lols.
Parkman is showing some promise so long as things for him get on track, and Mohinder is just becoming odd. Needs more badass.
Dajhail - October 18, 2008 03:12 AM (GMT)
Episode 5: Angels and Monsters
This episode was kinda alright, I guess. It would be nice though if Noah stopped having to tell Claire that he's doing everything to protect her, and Claire stopped complaining about whatever he's done this time, and they just either worked together on something constructively, or stayed the hell away from each other.
It was nice to see that they've finished remaking The Fly, and are trying something new now. I'm pretty sure they're ripping off another movie now, but I'm not sure which one, so I have to give them points for that. I'm interested to see where it's going. Kind of.
One more thought:
I know that Hiro didn't kill Ando, but I hope they have a damn good explanation how he faked it, especially with someone else that can 'stop time' watching him.

Well, there's always the chance that Maury(Sp?) was there, controlling Hiro as well. I mean, he seemed comfortable being everywhere else. But you're right, it's likely that he faked it.
Dajhail - October 22, 2008 04:36 AM (GMT)
Holy shit ep 6: Dying of the Light was a good ep. Shit be going down. The series is at its best when it puts powers vs powers, and there was a ton of that this episode. Plus Noah and Claire barely talked to each other!
Spoiler thoughts:
*Nice of Arthur Petrelli to solve the 'how many powers does Peter have now?' problem, just after he finally started using them effectively. Though it'd be nice if he has left the poor guy 'healing' and 'mind reading', seeing as he already has those ones. Plus if he's lucky, Peter's power took 'power stealing' as his dad took all his other ones.
*Poor Peter also lost his ability to be evil, though now his dad has THE HUNGER. Now I think about it, his dad has the hat trick now. He can copy your power, steal your power, or cut your head open and learn your power.
*Mohinder should give Arthur a handshake, see how he likes THAT shit.
*They had a good enough explanation on how Hiro faked Ando's death, I am satisfied. To be honest, I'd predicted that the speedster couldn't be stopped in time and would actually be in on it because she doesn't like killing.
*Hiro really needs to train himself to use his time stopping power as a reflex, because even when he sees it coming he always gets the shovel on the head.
*It's good that Hiro has gotten a couple more nemeses, because poor Adam Munroe ain't going to be around to plot eternal revenge on him any more. I honestly thought the guy would be around for at least a couple more seasons, he should have stayed in his coffin where it was safe.

I've been watching this show.. and I just can't get into it.. I dunno. Any thoughts?
Dajhail - October 23, 2008 08:48 PM (GMT)
Did you start watching it from the beginning? Because I imagine it'd be hard to catch up on who everyone is and what they're doing if you jumped in on season three.
Personally I thought the series was insultingly stupid after the first episode I watched, and I nearly gave up on it. But it started to grow on me so I stuck with it, and it did get better. It hasn't gotten any more intelligent, but every now and again a great episode like Company Man will turn up and reward me for my patience.
It probably helps that I sat and watched the entire first season in a day though. The series is a lot better when you don't have a chance to stop and think about how stupid what you just watched was.

Ep6 was awesome. I want more damnit. More!
Gintech - October 28, 2008 08:47 PM (GMT)
Well see that's the thing, it's not even ha-ha stupid.
spik - October 29, 2008 04:48 AM (GMT)
Ep 7 was okay. Seems to be becoming very linear and flat though. :/
Dajhail - October 29, 2008 07:01 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I thought it was a solid episode, but nothing amazing. But Maya's leaving, so it gets bonus points for that.
Spoiler thoughts... actually, screw that, I'm just going to put 'SPOILERS!' in the thread title.
I'm actually liking Mohinder more now we've learned that he STILL doesn't want to get rid of his powers, he just wants rid of the nasty side effects. He gets into another deal with a sinister company and calls them on it, and they just say 'yeah we're probably evil, but you'll still work for us anyway' and they're right. Mohinder is starting to become one of the more interesting bastards on the series to me. Though to be fair, Arthur Petrelli seems to be killing off all the competition one per episode.
Elle's first response to seeing someone get thrown out of seven story window? 'Oh wow, he's not healing, he must have lost his powers!' Then she runs inside. To be fair though, I can imagine she's desperate enough to risk a seven story drop at that point.
I liked the contrast between Sylar and Peter this ep. Peter runs in to Pinehearst, gets caught, gets all his powers stolen. Sylar runs in to Pinehearst, saves Peter, tricks the enemy into letting him join their ranks, then helps Peter escape. And Sylar was up against more powerful enemies with far less powers of his own. It seems that this guy WAS the hero after all :D
People really need to learn to communicate important pieces of information in this series. "Arthur Petrelli can steal your abilities permanently through touch, and can control them with ease immediately afterwards" would have been a nice thing for Peter to mention.
African Issac: "You need to choose your path Hiro, or it will choose you!"
Hiro: "Then I choose not to take incredible risks to follow what 'destiny' apparently wants me to do."
African Issac: "Well there is another option, you could take a spirit walk."
Hiro: "Then I choose this much more sensible path to achieve the same result."
Hiro goes on spirit walk.
African Issac: "Hah, the guy should have chosen his own path, now destiny will choose it for him."
... I think African Issac's got it backwards there.

Damn, it seems that executive producers Jeff Loeb and Jesse Alexander have been fired. I don't know much about Alexander, but Jeff Loeb seems generally hated these days for his crappy writing. Perhaps this will mean better writing and fewer stupid plot twists?
Plus Mark Verheiden from Battlestar Galactica joined the writing team for the next volume a while back, and Bryan Fuller (writer of the episode 'Company Man') might be joining the series if his show Pushing Daisies is cancelled.
Seems that Heroes might be getting its shit together. Maybe. Hopefully.

Good. Get the show back on it's feet for fucks sake. This series is going downhill FAST.
Dajhail - November 13, 2008 02:28 PM (GMT)
Damn just watched 'Villains'... that was a damn good episode.
I'm sure I'm going to look back on it in an hours time and think 'wait, that doesn't make any damn sense. Also, didn't everyone used to say that Arthur killed himself, now it's a heart attack?', but right now I liked it.
He'd better not have taken Hiro's powers though, he needs them to be awesome.
Dajhail - November 19, 2008 01:53 PM (GMT)
'It's Coming'.
About as good as an episode where Hiro gets turned into a ten year old can be.
* Sylar had Peter's power all along, he was just to screwed up to use it! Does that mean that Peter had Sylar's power all along, he was just too stupid to use it?
* Speaking of Peter's intelligence, he actually outwitted someone this week. Granted it was the stupidest character in the series, but I was impressed anyway.
* Wait, they were both Claire's uncles... damn.
* Sylar and Elle got over their issues pretty quickly. YOU KILLED MY FATHER, YOU WORKED WITH THE COMPANY TO TURN ME INTO A SERIAL KILLER, I'LL ELECTROCUTE YOU TO DEATH, I'LL FORGIVE YOU... then hugs and electricity lessons.
* Glad to see death hasn't stopped Issac writing new comic books. Though maybe he was never anything more than the artist, and the comic's actual writing team have been addicted to spirit walking shitpaste all along.
* Matt really needs to work on his powers, he was next to useless this week.
* Most of the characters are together in groups again! Yay.
* Claire's the catalyst that lets people have artificial powers. Yeah...
* Mohinder is now officially more evil than Sylar. I approve of this turn of events.

its coming... but what is it?
Im not really buying this whole solar eclipse bullshit, but Im sure it will make for a good enough finale.
Peter hasnt re-accumulated any powers yet, despite being in the vicinity of a fair few villains and heroes alike. So how, if at all, is he going to pull it back around?
Im getting sick of Claire also.
Having Hiro stuck with the mind of a 10-year old boy is disappointing.

I think the idea is that his empathy power is actually gone, so he can't reaccumulate diddily-squat.

'The Eclipse, Part 1'
That wasn't a bad episode I thought. It's nice to see Peter and Nathan, and Claire and Noah get a chance to actually discuss things like normal people. Not so nice to see Sylar and Elle switch from good to bad to reformed to misunderstood to evil to redeemed to irredeemable every damn episode.
* I'm sure eclipses aren't supposed to last two episodes.
* Peter's outwitting everyone this week, revealing that he knows obscure facts about Haiti culture and can read a map. Clearly his power was affecting his intelligence all along.
* In the kingdom of the powerless, the HRG is king. It's just a shame he was too busy getting beat up by his daughter to think of perhaps having someone else around to help him guard the place. Also when hiding from Sylar, perhaps next time it'd be a good idea to try going to a place he doesn't know about. Not that it worked in the first episode.
* It seems that Claire's ability to get shot, stabbed, knocked over, or fall off something every episode isn't a secondary aspect of her power... fate just doesn't want this girl to live.
* Hiro definitely has memory problems. He repeated the same 'where did you learn that?' and 'there is a place we must go to learn what to do next' comedy bit that he did in the last episode.
* It seems that the Haitian and the power nulling virus from last season only reduces a person's powers without completely cancelling them out, as Sylar still had the hunger last year, Daphne could still walk around with the Haitian around in the cinema, and Adam almost certainly met him at one point without spontaneously dying of old age. Though Adam's time was apparently almost up anyway, as this eclipse would have killed him even if Arthur hadn't.
Dajhail - December 3, 2008 10:21 PM (GMT)
'The Eclipse, Part 2'
* Peter is continuing to be useful and right. This a shocking plot development I think I can get behind. Hopefully he's not getting his powers back any time soon.
* Noah was so shaken by his daughter being shot that he forgot to turn the sniper rifle's laser sight off. Not that it would have made a difference to anything if Sylar and Elle had been shot at the start of the episode. He probably should have decapitated Sylar too, but to be fair he didn't really have the knife for it.
* Nathan and Sylar need to figure out who they are and what they think, seriously. Their motivations and opinions seem to change every couple of episodes.
* Mohinder on the other hand has been consistently self serving, pathetic, and amoral since the first episode this season. Which is nice. Plus I never expected him to actually beat the shit out of Flint.
* 10 year old Hiro's story is actually pretty bearable, even with the comic book guy clichés. It's always nice to seem him use his power properly. Even with the mind of a 10 year old, Hiro's still the one actually taking down villains and saving people's lives.
spik - December 4, 2008 07:10 AM (GMT)
I'm so hoping this show is about to turn around. It's getting painful. Just get Hiro to go back to the start of this season and kill Arthur before it gets to where it is. Or the writers. They probably could do with some death also.
:(
Dajhail - December 4, 2008 06:11 PM (GMT)
Bryan Fuller's apparently going to be back by episode 20 which could mean good things for next season. You just gotta hold on for 9 more episodes to find out if he's the saviour of Heroes or if we're only going to get more of the same.
Plus the producer, Tim Kring, is apparently sick of time travel. Maybe he's sick of precognitive painting too? Maybe next year we'll get a plot which isn't based around people following the instructions and clues provided to prevent a terrible apocalypse that they're probably unknowingly bringing about themselves?

Funnily enough, this formua is much more enjoyable than the current lack there of. To me, it feels like every episode they're changing everyones directions, motives, and the entire idea of the show. Driving me banana shit crazy.

'Our Father'
That ep was... okay. Watchable. Didn't see Arthur Petrelli getting shot at all, I was certain that Peter would hesitate until it was too late, then maybe Sylar would show up to ask his question, but I never saw Arthur actually getting killed. I didn't predict that Hiro would be flung off a building but manage to catch a flagpole either, but that's mostly because it's stupid. Nice to see that Sylar's back to being the best part of an episode though, slicing heads and eating cake.
Incidentally, now all the powers Sylar and Peter got from dead heroes in seasons one and two (except Sylar's TK) have been lost forever with Arthur's death. No more precognitive painting, no more super hearing, no toaster melting or super memory. Plus now nobody can time travel, stop time or teleport.
Dajhail - December 11, 2008 03:04 AM (GMT)
I found an interesting Bryan Fuller interview about his new role on the series and his plans, with some minor volume 4 spoilers:
Bryan Fuller Interview.
Apparently they all realise where they went wrong this season, and they're going to make sure they fix it next year. Again. But hey, I have faith in them. Also, they've apparently hired John Glover to play
Sylar's dad. Which is nice :)
Dajhail - December 17, 2008 10:43 AM (GMT)
'Duel'
Damn fine episode, I thought. I definitely didn't see the ending coming, probably because it doesn't make any damn sense, but it had President Michael Dorn in it so I'll let them off.
* Ando finally gets his red lightning, giving him the ability best matching his personality... sidekick power! Poor Ando.
* Also poor Hiro, no powers and no more formula. Although if you consider the formula to be the real villain this year, Hiro was the one who defeated it again personally for the third year running. Also now he's lost his powers he can knock other people down with one punch for a change. Shouldn't have called him Pikachu...
* How exactly do you travel the opposite way through time with a speedster power, running backwards? Also the 'speedster grabs someone and they all run at the same speed' thing comes of as stupid and they're really not selling it well.
* Mohinder - "Peter, I'm obviously sick and as my previous bit of exposition revealed, I think that this injection may be my only chance of a cure (despite living for years like that in the other timeline... apparently)." Peter - "No Mohinder, I have to destroy ALL of the formula, even the bit which you're going to use to save your life!" Way to be a hero Peter. That totally cancels out you tricking Nathan at the start of the ep.
* Points to Peter though, he went to Pinehearst with a mission and he pulled it off. He wasn't tricked, mindwiped, infected with THE HUNGER, knocked off a bridge, stabbed in the head with glass, blown up in a nuclear explosion, thrown out of a window, or hugged. Way to go Peter, you're finally the hero. Have your powers back as a reward.
* Nathan is starting to give me Lex Luthor vibes. I'm not sure turning all your friends into the government is really the second best way of helping the weak from oppression they cannot fight themselves, but I'm sure Nathan knows what he's doing.
* Nice death count in this ep. I really didn't expect to see so many characters hitting the ground. Meredith & Flint (maybe), Knox, Metal Arms guy, Creepy Puppet guy. With the way they're clearing house with season three characters, Daphne's very lucky to still be around.
* Also Captain America got his neck snapped! Hah!.
* I liked the way events in the episode mirrored themselves and the opening episode. Sylar marches through Primatech, taking them down from within, Peter marches through Pinehearst doing the same thing. Angela and Nathan both inherited their respective organisations through Sylar murdering the original owner, and now both lose them via explosion by one of the firestarters. The first ep had Peter threatening Nathan with a pistol, and Sylar stalking Claire like this episode, however this ends very differently for Sylar and Nathan.
* I guess the Haitian went for a lie down or something. Sure hope he didn't blow up offscreen.

^^Hilarious.
Also, you forgot the possible death of Sylar. Stabbed in the head + left to burn? Though, we all know he'll be back.
Loved this episode. Now I'm actually keen for Volume 4. This episode was a major pick-up from the rest of the season. Now Hiro just needs his power back... some how.
Also, I thought the whole speedster thing was going to be explained by "she's actually a time traveller, not a speedster, which is why she has good reflexes when she's 'going fast', and why she spoke to Hiro in episode (1-2-3, whatever) when she stole the formula" but unfortunately not. Would've made much more sense.
Gilrad - January 1, 2009 01:42 PM (GMT)
So the next theme will be "Persecution by the government".
Makes me wonder what overarching plot they can take from x-men next (since we already have Stop the Plague). My bet's on "Adventures through the far futuristic future and/or space"
But I digress. I have hopes for the series, if only they would remember potentially important things every once in a while (cough irish girl cough super hearing and other forgotten powers cough haitian cough regeneration blood = miracle cure cough the wonder kids cough I could go on and on...)
Dajhail - January 1, 2009 04:42 PM (GMT)
I think you're safe from far future and space storylines because the series wouldn't have the budget to do it right, and it'd be so far from the 'real people with powers in the real world' setting that it'd risk alienating the audience. Also, no giant robots.
I'm kinda annoyed that Peter's totally forgotten Caitlin too, but to be fair he only spent one episode in any kind of position to find her, and he was preoccupied with world cracking catastrophes and people trying to murder him at the time. Now he's got no time travel powers and no one to get them back from.
Also all the forgotten powers like super memory, super hearing, and super melting are all gone now, so at least they'll have a good reason for not showing up next season.
Right now I think the powers are down to:
Peter:
1. Empathic mimicry
2. Nathan's flight
3. Flint's pirokinesis
4. Mohinder's Spider-Man powers
Sylar:
1. Intuitive aptitude/empathic mimicry
2. Telekinesis
3. Claire's healing
4. Bob's Midas touch
5. Seeing an object's past through touch
6. Elle's lightning
7. Lie detector
