The best way is when you post it to 'preview' your post and see if the site you are using allows linking. If you are good to go and the picture shows up, you are spared the n00bness.

Swords, the pictures will show up for you because you'll still have them in your cache from when you visted the site. If you want to see what everyone else is seeing you'll have to refresh your browser.
Easiest way around anti-hotlinking crap is to use a site like photobucket, and upload the images to that instead. Pictures linked from a photobucket account should always work.
