I thought it was about time to make a forum post regarding my current project considering the current speed at which its being produced at the moment (I'm on fire, baby! :P) and so here we are. Have a read and tell me your thoughts!
StoryLlanie and Keros Saxxen lost their parents during the Escalot War six years ago and the only thing they inherited was a fair reputation among the noble houses of Onellei and the Treaty-Knights of Gerreius and a mysterious magical Atlas.
Upon inspecting the strange book it had soon become apparent to the youths that it's annotations were left unfinished by their late parents. Under the instruction of their childhood scholar Marke Mallemus the children spent years training to survive in the wilderness with the intent of completing the annotations of the ancient atlas.
Soon enough Llanie and Keros, along with Llanie's strange tiger companion Kerowyn, set foot to explore the world. They eventually arrived at The Streamlands to seek out a particular waterfall that seemed to have held some significance to their parents. Keros' quick temper during a trivial argument had him leave Llanie and Kerowyn to find the waterfall on his own.
Llanie and Kerowyn searched the wilderness for Keros and eventually found him in a bloodied heap at the foot of the waterfall they were searching for. Before Llanie could contemplate what she was seeing a monstrous being emerged from behind the cascading waters and attacked her and Kerowyn - easily defeating them.
Llanie woke up sometime later to realise that Keros' body had vanished as had the monster that had apparently killed him. After searching endlessly without results she and Kerowyn had no choice but to return home and report to Marke what had happened.
Llanie's dreams were endlessly haunted by thoughts of her brother and a recurring image was that of a distant island in which she could hear his voice calling out to her. One day she is informed by a mysterious man that her mentor Marke has fled Onellei to escape criminal charges for breaking into the Forbidden Library. He was rumoured to be hiding out in a remote island in the central seas.
The likeness of his description to the island haunting her dreams was uncanny and Llanie and Kerowyn soon made their way to Solus Isle in search of answers. When she arrives Marke asks her to investigate the nearby ruins to aid his research and she sets out in the hope of finding clues about Keros as well. In the depths of the ruins is a crystal depicting the image of her brother and a mysterious man trapped somewhere in the unknown. The shock of the sight of her brother causes her to drop the stone and shatter it in two.
Now Llanie's quest to find a means to repair the broken stone and uncover the link between the five hundred year old artefact and her brother begins while she desperately clings to the only glimmer of hope that gives her a reason to live... that Keros might still be alive.
FeaturesHere is a description of the game's features.
Scripted Story & Expansive WorldI have a passion for writing stories and this means that passion has been transferred to the storyline of Memoria. It is still a traditional RPG so there are certain cliches I have not strayed from using in order to invoke the feel of such games BUT I have attempted to deliver it in such a way that you (the player) will be absorbed into the games events and become emotionally involved with the characters.
The story has been fully scripted prior to development to speed up the games production and to streamline the plot so that it is free of plotholes and inconsistencies. I am pedantic about dialogue so you can expect that all the characters will speak naturally and conversations will flow clearly.
Ability ChargesI've scrapped the traditional MP system found in most RPGs entirely and replaced it with a system to promote strategy. Characters instead use ability charges to use skills. At the beginning of every battle, monsters and characters alike have 0 AC. In order to use an ability turns must be spent preparing it.
Abilities cost anywhere from 1 to 3 charges (and characters and monsters can only possess a maximum of 3 charges at once except under special conditions). My reason for doing this is to promote thought when fighting enemies instead of just spamming abilities mindlessly.
The abilities themselves have all been designed so that they are vital in harder battles and certain situations so that the effort required to use them is worth it.
Skillset SystemEach character in Memoria has a huge pool of 24 battle abilities and 5 field abilities to choose from. However the skillset system set up in Memoria allows each character to only have 5 abilities active at any one time. Because of this players must take into account the types of enemies they are up against and adjust their skillsets accordingly in order to battle effectively.
Field abilities do not take up skill slots but only one can be active at a time via the equipping of various tools found throughout your adventure.
Mastery SystemIf you want to customise your characters a little further there is a system in the game which allows you to spend potential points (1 is gained every 3 levels) in the characters three speciality areas. Distributing these points grants bonuses to stats, upgrades to abilities and various other 'specials'.
Keep in mind that once your potential rank in one area ascends a certain point, it becomes more difficult to increase your rank in the two other areas (the amount of points needed to ascend ranks increases).
The AtlasBesides the main storyline every game has an array of bonus content and sidequests to complete. In Memoria you can use the magical Atlas that Llanie inherited from her parents to keep track of your progress with this extra content. The Atlas contains a page on each game area and tracks quests started/completed, treasures missing/found and bosses that have been defeated.
Once you complete an area's page (completing all quests, collecting all treasures and defeating all bosses in that area) you can present it to the Archaeus Academy in order to recieve substantial rewards! Completing every page and achieving 100% game completion rewards you with a bonus ending.
CraftingNone of the equipment in the game is bought - all of it is crafted at blacksmiths or tailors. Materials are scattered throughout the world and assemble in a separate inventory for use at crafting shops.
Crafting is a matter of selecting the appropriate materials in the correct amount and order. Crafting guides can be bought and found in all sorts of places that tell you the exact combinations required to create particular gear.
