Since Fable 2's release late Nov....

Fable 2 - 3/5
Dead Space - 3/5
Gears1 - 3/5
Mother3 - 4/5
Fallout 3 - 5/5

The only one I want to go back to is Fallout 3. I spent 60 hours on it and I can definitely spend quite a bit more. I'm playing through dmc4 at the moment.

Is this an unbiased review? I think the whole execution of Dead Space was nearly flawless, but the execution of fallout 3 was..hurried, they've even missed adding a 3rd person animation for sidestep-running :P

Yeah but Dead Space completely failed to include a large explorable post apocalyptic version of Washington DC and doesn't even have V.A.T.S!

Banjo Tooie is better.

Well I was a huge fan of the original Fallouts, as well as Oblivion, so FO3 was just Oblivion in a better skin for me. I loved the premise, the freedom, the exploration...it was gaming bliss for the many hours I spent playing it.

Dead Space, while still entertaining, was over in 10 hours. I have no incentive to play it more, as you spend a fair chunk of the game backtracking to begin with. Poor level design and lack of weapons add to this. I loved playing through the game but I'm done with it. No loose ends need tying up. Nevertheless, an above average game and a great take on survival horror. I hope the devs next offering focus more on what they do well rather than trying to collaborate other game's successful mechanics into their own game.

For a game with the scope of Fallout3, many issues can be overlooked. The animation is probably the worst thing about the game I cant think of, (aside from the writing in contrast to the originals, dont get me started) but that's even less of an issue in 1st person (which is how I played the majority of the game). Other issues like awkward dialog, bugs, and other factors that take away from the "immersivness" can be forgiven because the player is given so much freedom. Story/Cinematics are often sacrificed in games like this, but I don't mind at all.

I look at games like GTA4, where they make a chase vehicle invulnerable for an entire mission just because they want you to end it in a cinematic fashion. I'd rather them let me do things my way. Fallout 3 might be a little rough around the edges is some areas, but the trade-off it totally worth it.

BTW Fallout 3 is my favourite game I played this year, so I guess it might be a bit bias :P

Yeah, i'm just kind of tired of the amout of shitty half buggy games that gets released and fully paid for.. i've been at NMA for several years lurking and mostly agreeing about fallout 3, but i enjoy it as it's own game.. But seeing it in another perspective, it's like.. an orgy where nobody ever comes, i think fallout 3 was too packed with events and the level design in the wasteland cities were horrible with all those magick walls that made you walk for miles to get around a blockade..
I think it's a great game, i just think publishers should take more time polishing their games, to the point where it's actually worth every penny and there's no aspects that ruin the mood of this interactive story.

Like retail games used to be, Fallout 2 is still my favourite, because bethesda crammed alot and compressed it in small space with half-worked up finish. Also, my graphics card is TOO NEW to play it properly, that said it looks like ASS with everything cranked up. Now, that can be because it's an ATI card but still, it's tiresome.

PS. I like my games rough aswell, making a car invincible is just..lame.
Call of Duty 4, Warcraft 3, Dead Space, Mass effect are all good examples of what i mean with finished and polished. (Trying to be unbiased, i'm an FPS player)

Anyway, i'm open for discussion. My Fallout 3 looks like shit with my topnotch gaming rig, and there's alot of flaws that ruin the mood that would be so good if it weren't for that.

Edit: Err, let's not hijack the subject, sorry :x

Sorry, I finally saw an excuse to use the 'split thread' button, and I had to try it :D

I've heard people say that Fallout 3 is buggy, but it's been steady as a rock to me. Of course it runs like crap and crashes all the time on my PC, but then my PC is ancient and I'm surprised it runs at all. The Fallout games apparently have a tradition of being more or less broken on release and needing major patching, which is understandable considering how huge they are, but from what I've read Fallout 3 seems to be fine for most people.

On the other hand I think I've been spoilt by games like GTA, Mercenaries and Morrowind, but those invisible walls in the city annoyed me so much. Like, I nearly quit playing when I realised how much trouble it was to get around the rubble through the stations. Fortunately you don't need to spend much of the game there, but damn that frustrated me.

MindWash - December 22, 2008 01:40 AM (GMT)
I think the bugs in the game are more of bethsoft issue, not a franchise one. Every game they ship has issues from the start, but like I said, I'll forgive them as the game is so damn big and ambitious.

I don't find the invisible walls too annoying. They are really only an issue in the DC downtown area of the map. I think they added them to make the area more segregated, as they don't want a level 1 player wandering in right off the bat. It sections off some of the more powerful enemies.

I just love this game so much. I was very worried like most FO fans yet I wasn't anticipating Fallout THREE per se, but rather a new take on the premise which is long dead in my mind. It's rare that you'll buy a game full price and play the shit out of it for the following weeks, and not be completely sick of it afterwards. More patches, DLC and mods will add to the game's longevity. (personally I didn't play much of unmodded Oblivion) The construction set will be out soon as well, which will bring on an influx of mods. I plan on making a few myself.

Right now I'm taking a break before I playthrough again with an evil character. By the time I'm done there will be the extra content to sink my teeth into. :)

Fall Out 3 is really good and it gives you a tun of hours of good ol fasioned fun, Fable 2 is good though it does get boring after a while due to the lack of quests and clothes, Call of Duty: World at War is what i am currently playing and i have to say i am really enjoying it. I play online every weekend with my clan (made up of my friends).

But my pick for game of the year would have to be Castle Crashers. Come on, it has everything anyone could want in it.

MindWash - January 6, 2009 05:36 AM (GMT)
Hate to derail the topic once more but Castle Crashers is indeed amazing. Just bought it. Add GT MindWash to Live if you wanna play sometime :)

I love fallout 3. When I heard years ago that they were transfering Fallout to FPS I was worried they would muck it up. The only other good RPG/FPS out at the time was System Shock 2. But they did a great job.

What i dont get is how, I can run Fallout 3 on Highest Graphics with maxed out veiw distance and it doesnt trip or lag at all, but Oblivion, trips like a mo'fo when I try and even turn up past half.

Either my two 512mb SLI graphics cards dont like oblivion. or they coded it in such a way that it takes way too much graphics processor to run smoothly. But they must have fixed it with Fallout 3, which has superior graphics, but smotther play??? Isnt it the same Engine though?
Maybe its all that green... Goes to show, Nuked wastland = Runs better than Grassy Paradise

MindWash - April 1, 2009 05:43 AM (GMT)
Oblivion runs much better if you tweak the .ini file. You can lower the poly count for the grass, meaning it'll still be present, but not as thick. Thus saving fp/s.

Atomic PC has a great guide, using it I had awesome results.
